Abstract:The UK has long been a major destination for Chinese investment in Europe，partly thanks to its liberal and open economy. As predicted in last year’s report，a complete overhaul of Britain’s foreign investment regulation，as envisioned in the BEIS’s long-time measures of reform，quickly lost momentum during 2018-2019，amid dampening controversy and debate over national security risks of foreign investment，conflicting views over the proposed measures by stakeholders，and perhaps more importantly predominance of Brexit in domestic politics. Post-referendum Britain has，quite unexpectedly yet confirmed by various sources，become an ever more favourable destination for capital. Likewise，in spite of declining Chinese investment overseas in 2018，Britain remained the largest European recipient of Chinese capital and was ranked the second in the world. In addition to residential and commercial real estate，Britain’s proud sectors of education，technology，manufacturing，finance and fintech，as well as construction，have continued and are expected to continue to attract Chinese capital in the near future.
