Abstract:In order to accurately understand the construction levels and development of China’s national central cities in terms of integrated services, network hubs, science and technology innovation, open exchanges, humanistic cohesion and ecological livability in 2018,this study adds new growth indexes to the original construction indexes and measure these two kinds of indexes for the nine national central cities. As a whole, the measurement of construction indexes shows that the nine cities are clearly stratified, with Shanghai,Beijing and Guangzhou still in the first echelon that boasts of strong growth momentum as a whole;with Chongqing,Chengdu,Tianjin and Wuhan in the second echelon that shows relatively good development trends;with Xi’an and Zhengzhou in the third echelon that still has much room for improvement in all indexes. The results of six functions measured as construction indexes for the cities are analyzed and suggest that attention should be paid to ensuring the coordinated development of various functions and the coordination between economic development and ecological livability during national central city construction. The construction of open cities should be promoted,a cultural brand image should be built, and urban diseases should be effectively cured. Only in this way will the national central cities play a better role in leading, demonstrating, radiating and driving the development of metropolitan areas and city clusters and thereby promote coordinated regional development.
