Abstract:Papua New Guinea declared independence on September 16,1975 and then joined the British Commonwealth, which marked the birth of the largest island country of the South Pacific. Although China and Papua New Guinea are separated by vast oceans, and have different political and economic systems, the bilateral relations between them have experienced a stable development in the past few decades. In October 1976, the newly independent Papua New Guinea established diplomatic relations with China. Since then, in despite of occasional setbacks, the bilateral relations have developed rapidly on the basis of the principles of equality, mutual benefit, cooperation and win-win. The two countries reached a series of important cooperation in international and regional economic and political affairs. In the 21st century, under the background of the rise of China and the United States' high-profile return to the Asia-Pacific region, the strategic position and value of the Pacific island countries will significantly increase.Papua New Guinea is an important partner of China in the Pacific island countries, thus the bilateral relations between Papua New Guinea and China have a new opportunity for further development.
