Abstract:2019 is an unusual year for Italy and China-Italy relations. Italy experienced a government crisis that attracted much attention. Afterwards, the “populist government” formed by the Five Star Movement and the League party ended in haste and a new coalition government formed by the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party came into power,i.e. “yellow-red government” replaced “yellow-green government”. The process of government crisis and government change once again reflected the complexity of current Italian politics, and also provided us with new “materials” and perspectives for observing and thinking about the development trends of populist parties in Europe. The government change does not mean that a series of problems in Italy will be solved easily, the economic growth is approaching zero again, the public debt level is still very high, the social situation remains severe, and all of these are still difficulties faced by the new government. Since the new government took office,Italy’s relations with the EU have been returning to the “normal” track and meanwhile Italy is trying to push the EU to make adjustments in some important policy areas such as public finance discipline and immigration policy. Both Italy’s last “yellow-green government” and current “yellow-red government” attached much importance to promoting China-Italy relations and cooperation. President Xi Jinping’s successful visit to Italy in 2019 and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly advance the “Belt and Road” construction between China and Italy marked that the bilateral relations have upgraded to a new level and the cooperation between the two countries has entered a new stage of comprehensive and high-quality development.
