Abstract:Soon after the first Portuguese sailing to the coast of Guangdong，Zhujiang estuary appeared on the western maps according to the field observations. The shape of the estuary changed frequently，affected by the political situation，the selection of main sailing route and the accumulation of geographical knowledge. On the maps of sixteenth century，many place names with the prefix of “Ma-” appeared，which may probably refer to the place of Macao，and the forms of which may origin from the local place names related to the faith of Mazu（妈祖），and the place name “Macao” gradually stereotyped during the late sixteenth century. On the maps of sixteenth and seventeenth century，the place names probably related to Macao were marked on different places，former on the coastline，later on an island.
