“财通四海”：19世纪暹罗华人瓷币的“全球生命史”

Abstract:This study aims to break the disciplinary boundary between European colonial history and overseas Chinese history by focusing on the “global life” of a seemingly insignificant thing，the Chinese porcelain coins in nineteenth century Siam （Thailand）. It investigates the different life stages of these extraordinary coins. They were produced in the Fengxi kilns in Chaozhou，circulated among the overseas Chinese in Siam，collected by European colonial museums，and are in the present day referred to as “piglet （coolie） coins” （zhuzai qian猪仔钱） by Chinese media. By assembling data from European museum collections，Dutch colonial archives，Chaozhou kilns，and Siamese social and economic history，this article shows how such an overseas Chinese thing tells an entangled global history about Chinese overseas migration，Siamese fiscal transformation，and European colonial expansion.
