Abstract:Promoted by historical opportunities and strong political will，the European Monetary Union （EMU） was established in a situation where the requirements of the “optimal currency area” were far from being met. The introduction of euro made great contributions to the prosperity and stability of Europe，but it also exacerbated the risk of macroeconomic imbalance in the euro zone and finally triggered the sovereign debt crisis. In this context，the EU，on the one hand，takes a series of institutional construction measures to mitigate the imbalance risk；on the other hand，commits to boost the internationalization of euro，in order to facilitate the stability and development of the European Economic and Monetary Union.
