Abstract:Does politics have an essence？Does Shakespeare see what is essential about politics？Are there，in other words，universal aspects of political practice and does Shakespeare tell us something about them？What are Shakespeare's positions on the political issues of his time？Can we recover such a vision by studying his plays？Answers to questions like these are of more than merely historical interest，for properly rephrased，such questions may bear on contemporary issues.Through in-depth analysis of Shakespeare's dramatizing politics，and the relationship between politics and history in his plays，this paper reveals how to read Shakespeare，how to explore in his plays the problem of legitimacy，and further locates the same issues that Shakespeare and Machiavelli confront on the historical map.
