Abstract:French international discourse power denotes the international standing and international influence of the French language. While its strategic positioning remains intact in France，French is confronted with genuine challenge from English. Promoting French overseas is constantly perceived in French diplomacy as an important component of the power and international influence of France. Regardless of her fiscal difficulties，France has over the past few years sought to marshal resources and proactively pursued institutional reforms. Whereas its role at the United Nations，European Union and African Union lags far behind English and suffers some decline relative to its historical peak，French still enjoys very substantial advantages over other languages. Furthermore，thanks to the general carrying-out of the principle of multilingualism，French has witnessed some improvement in her standing compared to a couple of years ago. French has come to maintain its standing as an international lingua franca，with outstanding performance in certain respects. In light of the in-depth implementation of multilingualism and the projected fast-paced increase of the African population，French is expected to register some further gain in its international prestige.
