Abstract:The security situation in Europe is deteriorating, with crises arising frequently. While several unsolved problems continue to present great threats, such as the Ukraine Crisis, terrorist attacks and the refugee crisis,Europe is faced with increasingly complex and diverse security challenges. The security order in Europe is coming to a “turning point”:bitter confrontation between NATO and Russia arises in Eastern Europe;security mechanism is under high pressure;counter-terrorism measures seem weak and there are so many loopholes in border management. Moreover, security theories are frequently challenged while macro strategies cannot be easily adapted to the new situation. As the development of freedom and democracy backfires, the insecurity in Europe grows rapidly. The EU and its member states have taken positive actions, which include strengthening collective defense in order to consolidate the eastern border, coordinating the security mechanisms to safeguard internal security and promoting strategic adjustment to rebuild confidence in Europe. By building capacity, encouraging cooperation and carrying out strategic adjustment, the EU intends to completely reshape the security landscape. However,Europe does not have an isolated geopolitical environment. As neighboring countries fall into a new round of turmoil,Europe is bound to be affected. In addition,Europe’s own security “deficit” could not be eliminated in a short term, which would further expose its security deficiencies at both theoretical and institutional levels. Therefore, the security environment in Europe might still be worsening in the future.
