Abstract:Tokyo’s winning the bid for 2020 Olympics is a surprising result，considering the revisionist view and remark of Japanese history held by many Japanese politicians and the unresolved Fukushima nuclear and radioactive accident. But the result is not surprising due to the fact that Japan is good at expanding and making use of its “smart power”，which has built a positive national image for Japan in the international community. In bidding for the summer Olympics in 2020，Japan has made great effort in lobbying activities，convincing the IOC members that Tokyo will be an ideal choice. The success not only reflects the way Japan uses its smart power，but also provides Japan an opportunity as well as challenge for hosting a successful Olympics. Whether Japan can live up to the expectation deserves the world’s attention.
