Abstract:Food security is a global issue. The situation about food security differs in all five Central Asian states. The ability of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, as major agricultural and grain-producing powers, to achieve self-reliance on food supply is critically important to the situation of food security in the Central Asian region. The special characteristics in the agricultural development of Central Asian states are closely relevant to the situation of food security. The half-measured agricultural and land reforms, the conflicting priority between growing grains and cottons, and the shortage in water resources and agricultural machineries have all been hampering the grain production of the Central Asia. Whether or not the governments of the states of the region are able to deepen agricultural and land reforms, create effective agriculture supporting measures, and improve the crop-growing structure will be a key factor in ensuring the stability of food security situation of Central Asia.
