Abstract:The French-Australian submarine deal was at the same time an extension of the US-France special relationship，a cornerstone of Paris’ Asia-Pacific geopolitical ambitions and a lever for the US and Australia to counter China. The torpedoing of the transaction denotes a radical escalation by Washington of its containment strategy against Beijing. In this geopolitical infighting，Washington，Canberra，Paris and London apparently acted，so to speak，as the choreograph，the captor，the captive and the cheerleader，respectively. Washington is scheming to replicate the cold-war script in the Asia-Pacific and contain China primarily through military muscle and military alliances. The implications are arguably threefold：aggravation of Paris’ dependence on Washington，aggravation of Europe’s vassalization vis-à-vis America，and aggravated confrontational US posturing vis-à-vis Beijing.
