Abstract:In 2011, a massive student demonstration began in May,the largest protest in Chile since the return to democracy in 1990, which not only led to political turbulence but also social disturbances. On one hand, fallout from student protests resulted in a cabinet reshuffle, and eroded popular support for the government. On the other hand, student demands reflected the widening gap between the rich and the poor rooted in the Chilean society. A national education reform was both inevitable and necessary. The Chilean economy continued to grow briskly and employment was expanded steadily, bringing unemployment rates down to a low level. Diplomatically Chile made important advances in reinforcing commercial connections with Asian-pacific countries.
