Abstract:This article aims to take a comparative look at the inscriptions on the Greek vase and the Chinese Cizhou ceramic，and argues that the inscriptions have similar functions in expressing ideas and constructing spatial aesthetics. A further study shows that the similarities cannot explain all sides regarding the two ancient forms of daily-used household utensils；there are distinct poetic paradigms hidden behind their forms. The Greek vase inscriptions are characteristic of a story-telling narrative and an aristocratic taste，while the Cizhou ceramic inscriptions are of a lyric demonstration and a popular preference. The conclusion is that such comparative examination is useful in facilitating the cultural and literary communications between the west and China，and helps each obtain profound insights about their own poetic paradigms.
