Abstract:The year 2014 is the fifteenth year of Macao’s Reunification with China. With her unique cultural heritage, support from the Central Government and the tireless effort of the population,Macao gradually achieves her goal to be the “world-class tourism and leisure centre”. Macao promoted her tourism industry to a higher level in 2014,with the overall demand growing steadily. From January to October, the total number of visitors to Macao rose steadily in which markets from the Republic of Korea and the Chinese mainland experienced the fastest growth. Chinese mainland visitors accounted for nearly 70% of the total visitors. The main purpose of visitors to Macau was holiday (59%),followed by transit (21%). The proportion of visitors to gamble was relatively low, only at 7%. In the first three quarters, the total visitors’ spending increased significantly and per capita spending increased slightly. However, when taking into account the inflation changes in Macao, the real per capita spending declined. Gaming expenditure began to decline since the middle of 2014. The structure of visitors’ spending varied in different markets:Chinese mainland visitors spenta higher proportion in shopping, which constituted the major consumption force of jewellery and watches, cosmetics and perfumes, handbags and footwear. Visitors from other markets mainly bought local produces. Looking ahead to 2015,with the extension of the opening hours of the border checkpoints, improvements in infrastructure and the gradual completion of large resorts,Macau tourism is expected to step to a new level.
