Abstract:Under the context of rapid globalisation and the accelerated emergence of pluralism and openness in Hong Kong and Macao, together with the creative practice of the principle of “one country, two systems”,it is an important mission for primary and secondary schools in Macao to promote recognition of traditional Chinese culture and “cultural China” among the new generation. Since Reunification, the government has exercised much efforts on traditional Chinese culture education through the reform of education system, education policy and funding,in particular the publication of the Moral and Civic Education textbooks, the launch of a series of educational programs and student activities. Primary and secondary schools are offering courses in Chinese and related traditional Chinese culture education such as History,Geography,Ethics and Civic Education,Music and Visual Arts. However, traditional Chinese culture education has not yet formed a complete system. There are obvious gaps in the curriculum contents of History and Geography. Traditional cultural classics and classical Chinese studies also need to be strengthened. All these require greater attention to overall planning, improving curriculum system, strengthening the construction of teaching material, and upgrading the quality of teachers. Continued attention should be put on visits to Mainland China, exchanges, and establishing inter-school and intra-school coordination and working mechanism to fully utilise educational resources from Mainland China.
