Abstract:The Japan-U.S. trade agreement signed in October 2019 comes into force on January 1，2020. Unlike previous Japan-U.S. trade negotiations that lasted for one or even several years，the negotiation takes less than half a year，which is due to a “mini-deal” that Japan opens the market to American agricultural products under the CPTPP standard in exchange for the exemption of the U.S. tariffs on Japanese cars. It is obvious that the great achievements proclaimed by the Japanese and American governments cannot cover the fact that the agreement contributes nothing new and is a low-level one. The structural contradiction between Japan and the U.S. in the field of trade has not only been unsatisfactorily resolved. On the contrary，it becomes more complicated due to the even growing disputes between the two sides over trade policy.
