Abstract:Nuclear energy is an important part of the U.S.energy mix, accounting for about 20 percent of U.S.electricity. Since the beginning of the 21st century, successive U.S.administrations have been supporting for nuclear energy, but they have implemented different policies. The development of nuclear power in the United States has been slow due to a variety of reasons, such as lower natural gas prices, competitive renewable energy, slow electricity demand growth, and limited cost reductions of nuclear power. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has important energy implications, which will increase the price of natural gas in the short term and restricts the further competitiveness of natural gas-fired generation. In the long run,the role of geopolitical factors in energy security will be highlighted, encouraging energy-consuming countries to enhance energy diversification. At the same time,it has prompted the United States to place greater emphasis on competition with its global strategic competitors(China and Russia),which have posed a huge challenge to the United States in civilian nuclear energy area. The Biden administration has introduced several nuclear energy incentives, and it is expected that in the future, with the further development of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the U.S.motivations of the strategic competition and economic interests will be enhanced, and the U.S.nuclear energy technology innovation, industry and export policies will be further strengthened.
