Abstract:Rooted in the Horn of Africa，Khat is a native cash crop that has been a catalyst for changes in local farmers’ livelihoods and agricultural ecology in Ethiopia since the 1950s. The social life of khat is like a kaleidoscope. It serves as an “iron rice bowl” for the grassroots，a “social ill” in the eyes of the moral guardians，a “cash cow” of the national treasury，a “green gold” in the global market and a banned drug under the Eurocentric “scientific seeing”. This article is concerd with the fluid and polyphonic social history of khat，from the local cultivation，the commodification to its global flows.
