Abstract:The impact of COVID-19 on British media continued from 2020 to 2021. The sales of newspapers and magazines fell further. Some media had financial difficulties and more printed newspapers were closed. Advertising revenue from print media and broadcasting continued to decline. During the pandemic lockdown, people rediscovered the value of reading. As a result, the sales of physical books in Britain reached a record high in the past eight years. The pandemic intensified people’s dependence on the Internet, and the number of views of online audiovisual content increased sharply. In terms of news consumption, the ratings of radio and television soared with COVID-19 news programs. At the same time,Internet became the most popular news acquisition platform second only to television. Accurate and reliable professional media, such as public broadcasting and digital versions of traditional media, became reliable news sources. In the field of media regulation, the focus of British media,Internet and advertising regulation gradually shifted from responding to challenges brought by the pandemic to helping restore the growth of media industry and achieving “better reconstruction” of people’s trust in the media and the order of information dissemination. Maintaining high news standards, controlling harmful Internet content and protecting interests of audience, especially those of the vulnerable, have become important issues for British media regulation in 2020.
