Abstract:Where do Plato and Confucius fit in the field of ancient harmony theories？First both Plato and Confucius are realists about harmony. The Greater Harmony is real and objective；it is to be pursued as the basis of all other harmo-ny. Second，both Plato and Confucius are what might be called “nested harmony theorists.” That is，they accept the macrocosm-microcosm analogy. Third，both Plato and Confucius favour resolution of discord. They do not acquiesce in “creative tension” as some of their predecessors did. There are differences between Plato and Confucius，of course. For example they approach resolution in different manners and degrees. Plato takes a more active approach to resolution than Confucius does. Some of the reforms he suggests involve radical transformations of the society in which he lived.
