Abstract:The United Kingdom is one of the most important countries in the world in the media industry，with newspapers boasting the longest history in the world，BBC as the classic example of global public broadcaster，as well as its unique media regulation system. It continues to play a leading role in media transformation by combining the traditional media with those utilizing the internet and mobile telephony. The United Kingdom ranks top，or even the first，judged from the absolute number as well as percentage，in terms of its media impact，media industry performance，and the consumption and usage of mass media contents by its small population. The development，success and problems of the British media industry are deeply rooted in its special media regulation system. “The British Media” contained in this Report covers the following：the current status of the British newspapers and broadcasting industry；the development and changes under the internet and mobile telephony；the regulation of the media industry，etc. It is the first time that “media development” is included in “The United Kingdom Development Report”. Therefore，the media development part is composed of two sections：the first on the history and the current conditions of the British media，and the other on the development of British medial over the recent years.
