Abstract:Over years since 2005, so called "energy independence" presents itself as a new reality in the USA. This new reality and its features are collective consequences rooting from US energy supply and demand, technological advancements and energy policy in the past six decades.The author argues that the trend of "energy independence" presents a series of fundamental changes in the US energy sector with clear strategic interests and profound repercussions beyond itself. There are many elements and aspects being subject to further discussion, such as its driving forces, trajectory as well as uncertainties and risks involved. As a big energy user in the world, China has to explore carefully what it can learn instead of copying from America for its overall energy strategic setting in the future.
