Abstract:The role of Gujarati traders is indispensable in the long history of trade in the Indian Ocean，and they played an important role in the early modern period. Gujarati merchants are the typical representatives of traditional merchants in the Indian Ocean. From the 16th to 17th centuries，the trade of Gujarati merchants was in a prosperous period，and they established a vast trade network from the Philippine Islands in the east to the coast of East Africa in the west，and from Cape Town in the south to Russia in the north，which made them an important force in the world’s economic exchanges at that time. European invasion of the Indian Ocean，to the Gujarati merchants trade has brought a huge impact，affecting its trade routes and types of goods，but in the short term has not shaken the important position of Gujarati merchants in the Indian Ocean. By virtue of their textile export，trade profits，agent system，financial trade system and other advantages，Gujarat merchants not only ensured the stable operation of their trade network，but also prompted the Europeans to establish a “partnership” with them，which reflected the strong competitiveness and influence of the traditional merchants in the Indian Ocean.
