Abstract:In 2023,the Chinese film and television industry witnessed a powerful resurgence. The total annual box office reached $7.793 billion,ranking second globally. However,the import film market presented new characteristics:despite a general increase in import film box office revenue,Hollywood blockbusters experienced a significant decline,failing to secure a position in the top ten. Japanese films,on the other hand,achieved outstanding performance in the import film market. Additionally,the quantity and box office revenue of imported profit-sharing films saw a substantial increase. The practice of “imported buyout films” continued to inject more diverse content into the market,while various film festivals and exhibitions were held domestically. Furthermore,global film box office continued to recover,with the international influence of Chinese cinema steadily strengthening. Nevertheless,Chinese capital participation in global film production decreased,prompting domestic films to expand international influence through remakes and adaptations. Leveraging initiatives like the “Belt and Road” for cooperation and exchange,Chinese films ventured abroad and found root in international markets. In the post-pandemic era,China should continue to prioritize the role of imported films in cultivating domestic market competitiveness and the international influence of Chinese cinema. This includes further opening up to imports,effective management of film scheduling,and strategic incorporation of co-productions. Moreover,emphasis should be placed on the significance of international film awards,alongside the organization of domestic international film festivals,as means to continually enhance the international influence of Chinese cinema.
