Abstract:On July 26，2023，Niger’s president Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown by his presidential guards. This is the 6th coup d’état in West Africa since 2020，a region torn by terrorism and existential poverty. Niger’s coup triggered fierce geopolitical competition. ECOWAS threatened military intervention to restore constitutional order in Niger，which exacerbated tensions among regional countries. Niger’s junta cut military relationship with France，turned to Russia for security support. Niger formed alliance with Mali and Burkina Faso fight against terrorism. Niger’s junta showed firm willingness to safeguard national sovereignty. With the lifting of economic sanctions imposed by ECOWAS，plus the export of petroleum，Niger’s economy is recovering. In the coming months，the issue of political transition，security，Niger’s relations with Ecowas and western countries will still be observed closely.
