Abstract:After the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, medical exchanges between China and Japan reached a historical peak due to the frequent domestic wars in Japan as well as the gradual normalization of the Sino-Japanese relations. Japan laid the foundation for the flourishing of Kampo medicine in the Muromachi period through various ways, including sending envoys and other personnels to study in China, the importation and compilation of medical books, the importation of medicinal materials, and storytelling of famous doctors. On the other hand,China also contributed to the development of Kampo medicine in Japan through personnel exchanges such as government medical missionaries,Chinese doctors immigrated to or captured by Japan, and descendent doctors of the Ming Dynasty. In addition, the two countries cooperated through various channels to combat several epidemics in Japan, which fully demonstrated cooperative spirit and medical wisdom of both sides. The generosity of Chinese doctors in Japan, the disclosure of secret medical formulas, the free export of Chinese medicinal materials and medical books, the selfless teaching of medical skills and other practical and effective assistances all demonstrated the friendly attitude of the Ming court towards Japan, and made great contributions to the development of Japanese medical science in the Muromachi period. However, among the many famous Japanese doctors who studied in the Ming Dynasty, some legends of their medical practices in China must be viewed dialectically.
