Abstract:Due to historical and practical reasons, the cross-border ethnic issues in countries of Mainland Southeast Asia are relatively prominent and the frontier governance model is quite distinctive. Summarizing the historical experience of their frontier governance for cross-border ethnic groups can help bridge the gap between cross-border ethnic studies and frontier governance studies, and have a better understanding on the interaction between ethnic and geopolitical politics in small and medium-sized countries. This article briefly analyzes the diversion of frontier governance in cross-border ethnic groups in countries of Mainland Southeast Asia through combines the perspective of inter-ethnicism and regionalism. The countries of Mainland Southeast Asia have a profound tradition of inter-ethnicism governance, which is transforming towards a regionalist governance model. Strengthening national identity while diluting ethnic identity, choosing and exploring unitary and federal systems, and conducting international cooperative governance are the main options for frontier governance in countries of Mainland Southeast Asia. Because of the continuous and far-reaching impact of the inter-ethnicism governance model,as well as the reality of the regionalist governance model that can’t avoid the inter-ethnic relations, certain internal tensions in the governance of cross-border ethnic still exist, although it has shown a diversion from inter-ethnicism to regionalism.
