Abstract:Since Macron took office，France-Russia relations have moved forward amid instability. Macron adopted a flexible and pragmatic policy towards Russia during his first tenure，with distinctive features of Gaullism，and was regarded by many politicians and scholars as a heir to Gaullism. Although the positioning of Macron towards Russia is different from that of de Gaulle towards Soviet Union，both converged on adopting a policy geared less towards confrontation and more towards moderation and cooperation，which policy is deemed more in line with France’s interests. Macron believes that Russia is indispensable to building independent European security and defense，maintaining European security and stability，and ensuring France’s interests in the Middle East and beyond. It is Macron’s goal to ensure that France’s interests are maximized by balancing Russia and acting as a balancer between Russia and other countries. Internationally，Macron has always sought to portray France as a balancer. Balance，independence，flexibility and pragmatism are prominent features in Macron’s policy towards Russia. To that extent，he is arguably a true disciple of Gaullist diplomcy.
