Abstract:The early contacts between Japan and the Middle East could be traced back to 7th century although they were dispersed and accidental. Japan began to establish official diplomatic ties with Middle Eastern countries in modern time. But the Middle East did not show strategic significance for Japan until early 1970s when the first oil crises broke out. Since then，the Middle East became the key of Japan’s energy security and a platform where Japan seeks political power status. Fueled by these two strategic interests，Japan’s relations with the Middle Eastern countries have accelerated development and Japan has expanded its cooperation in a number of areas such as energy security，trade and economic cooperation，conflict mediation，participation in military intervention and anti-terrorist actions，etc. Japan has also made progress in breaking through the “Peaceful Constitution” by exploiting opportunities offered by conflicts in the Middle East. In a predictable future，the two strategic interests would continue to serve as the basic driving forces of Japan’s Middle East policy，while changes of geopolitics in the Middle East and adjustment of American Middle East policy would keep providing Japan with opportunities. The current dynamics of Japan-Middle East relations would continue.
