Abstract:T.S.Eliot's long poem “The Waste Land” contains significant allusions to apocalyptic texts in the Bible as well as images and themes which match the two recurring elements—terrors and decadence—in the apocalyptic pattern.The first part of this essay is an inquiry into a few quotations in the poem from The Book of Ezekiel，an exemplar of proto-apocalyptic literature，and from “little apocalypses” in the Synoptic Gospels including Mark 13，Matthew 24，and Luke 21.The second part is an analysis of terrors and decadence exemplified by images of death and themes of war，natural waste land，and spiritual waste land in the poem.“The Waste Land” reveals apocalypticism，namely，the worldview of apocalyptic literature，but of a hopeless and much more pessimistic kind since it lacks the belief in the new life in another world after the Last Days and seems to be trapped in endless crisis.
