Abstract:The understanding of metaphor as a pragmatic tool in the service of human progress remains a crucial presupposition for Blumenberg's work and constitutes the very method of Rorty's neopragmatism.Blumenberg's metaphorology influences Rorty's work and Rorty regards Blumenberg as an ally in an effort to bolster his own project.Blumenberg provides Rorty with a model of Geistesgeschichte conceptualized as a process of on-going conceptual transformations or reoccupations of absolute metaphors that remain latently operative within the tradition.Moreover，Blumenberg presents Rorty with a model of modernity conceptualized as the origin （and triumph） of philosophical pragmatism.Yet there is a crucial difference between their projects，for what Rorty cultivates as method is not at all compatible with the method of Blumenberg's metaphorology.What Blumenberg refers to as the pragmatic use of metaphor constitutes the object rather than the method of his metaphorological project.And while the success of pragmatism depends upon the disappearance of metaphor into the literality of language，the task of metaphorology consists in the opposite gesture of bringing precisely those metaphors to light which in the history of their pragmatic functioning have become naturalized.
