REPORT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHINA’S INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL TRADE (2023)

Abstract

In the context of the accelerated evolution of the world’s unprecedented changes in a century,cultural trade,as an important element in the construction of a strong cultural country,is of great significance to improve the country’s cultural soft power and enhance the effectiveness of international cultural communication. In recent years,China’s foreign cultural trade development has been remarkable,which is closely related to the strong support of the government and other relevant departments. The report of the 20th Party Congress emphasized the need to “implement the national cultural digitalization strategy” and “promote cultural self-confidence and self-improvement,and forge a new brilliance of socialist culture”,and with the strong support of policies,China’s digital cultural trade has developed rapidly,opening up a new pattern of China’s foreign cultural trade. In July 2022,the Ministry of Commerce and other 27 departments jointly promulgated the “Opinions on Promoting the High-Quality Development of Foreign Cultural Trade”,which focuses on deepening reform and opening up in the cultural field,activating new dynamics of innovation and development,stimulating the development vitality of market players,expanding cooperation channels and networks,and strengthening organization and guarantee,and puts forward 28 specific tasks and initiatives,pointed out the direction for China’s cultural trade with high quality innovative development. According to the statistics of the General Administration of Customs,the total import and export trade of China’s foreign cultural products trade in 2022 is $181.22 billion,of which,the export trade is about $163.68 billion and the import trade is about $16.59 billion.The China International Cultural Trade Development Report(2023) is divided into a general report,an industry chapter,a thematic chapter and a practical innovation chapter. Among them,the industry chapter provides in-depth analysis of nine key industry sectors,including performing arts,broadcasting,film and television,movies,book copyrights,animation,games,cultural tourism,artwork,creative design,etc. The deep integration of digital technology into the field of performing arts in 2022 has given rise to many new forms of performing arts and performance channels,and has also activated many new consumer demands for performing arts. The overall foreign trade of broadcasting film and television is stable and improving,and under the institutional environment of continuous policy initiatives,adjustment and optimization,China’s domestic film and television works have increased the pace of “going out”. 2022,the foreign trade of Chinese films has been hit by the epidemic,and the recovery trend of imported films is slow compared with domestic films. The box office and revenue of imported movies have declined. Book copyright transactions continued to develop steadily,the trade deficit continued to decrease,and the development momentum of digital publishing was relatively strong. In 2022,the foreign trade of China’s animation industry has shown the development trend of “all-age” market,and digital technology has efficiently empowered the international development of domestic animation. The successful holding of the Beijing Winter Olympics has stimulated consumer demand for ice and snow tourism services,with in-depth experience-based tourism gradually emerging,while the digital transformation trend of cultural tourism enterprises is obvious with the support of digital technology. China’s art market has further rebounded,and the economic environment has ushered in new opportunities. The number of galleries,art gallery exhibitions and auction events held further increased,and the volume of art trade remained stable. In addition,the scale of foreign trade of China’s creative design industry has expanded rapidly,maintaining a long-term trade surplus,and the operating income of creative design services has generally shown growth,and the proportion of operating income in the cultural industry has increased. The special section mainly focuses on the field of cultural digitalization,and discusses “digital labor” - non-standard employment in digital creative industry,digital empowerment to promote the international development of Beijing old brands,the development status of cloud exhibition model and the prospect of entering the post-epidemic era,cultural trade In addition,we also analyze,the current situation and development path of China’s theme park internationalization,and the opportunities and challenges of cultural trade development in BRICS countries. The chapter on innovation in practice focuses on the important practical cases of China’s cultural trade with foreign countries,with a focus on the practical characteristics and impact of China’s digital cultural trade policy,the progress and effectiveness of China’s cultural big data project,the response and future outlook of Chinese game enterprises in the face of international market challenges,and the “digital service export” strategy of China’s excellent traditional culture. The book also presents a qualitative analysis of the “digital service export” strategy of Chinese traditional culture.This book uses descriptive statistical analysis,case study analysis,literature analysis,survey research,and quantitative and qualitative analysis to discuss the current situation,problems,and future trends and prospects of China’s cultural trade in various key industries,thematic areas,and the process of practical innovation.
